Quick take
School review information
Brooke Elementary is a neighborhood school in a 'rebuilding' phase. While the quantitative data (1.4/10 rating) is concerning for academically focused families, the qualitative evidence shows a caring staff working hard to modernize resources, exemplified by their recent major literacy grant win. It offers a safe, inclusive environment but currently lags significantly behind provincial academic standards.
Editorial review summary
Parent and community feedback paints a picture of a school that is socially supportive despite its academic rankings. Families appreciate the 'quiet neighborhood' location and the small, tight-knit community feel where staff know the students well. The recent news about the library grant validated parent concerns about 'outdated books' (some 20+ years old), but also demonstrated the principal's commitment to improvement. There are no reports of competitive waitlists; the school is generally accessible to catchment families. Some parents note the prevalence of split classes, which is common in smaller schools.
Common positives
- Small, tight-knit community atmosphere
- Recent recipient of $35,000 Indigo Love of Reading grant
- Inclusive environment with strong ELL support
- Accessible admission for catchment families (no lottery)
- Committed administration actively seeking resources
Common concerns
- Extremely low academic ranking (1.4/10)
- Historically outdated library and learning resources
- Lack of specialized programs like French Immersion
- Reliance on split/combined classes due to size
Who this school may fit
Best suited for families living in the immediate North Delta catchment who prioritize a small, inclusive community over test scores, and who are willing to be active partners in their child's literacy development at home. Families seeking rigorous academic enrichment or French Immersion should look at other options in the Delta district.
Ratings and data
Academic information
Brooke Elementary currently faces significant academic challenges based on standardized metrics. With a Fraser Institute rating of 1.4/10 and a provincial rank of 1008/1015, the school sits in the bottom tier of elementary schools in British Columbia. These scores reflect struggles in Foundation Skills Assessment (FSA) results for literacy and numeracy compared to provincial averages. However, the school administration is actively addressing these gaps, evidenced by securing a major $35,000 literacy grant to overhaul outdated resources and improve student engagement with reading.
