School review information
École Gabrielle-Roy is a unique and valuable institution for eligible Francophone families in Surrey. While its historical academic rankings have been low, recent improvements are encouraging. The school's true strength lies in its vibrant community, comprehensive support programs, and commitment to preserving the French language and culture.
Editorial review summary
Publicly available parent reviews and discussions highlight the school's strong sense of community and cultural identity. Parents appreciate that it offers a fully immersive Francophone experience rather than just French Immersion, allowing children to maintain their French heritage. The free regional bus transportation is frequently praised as a major convenience for families. While some parents on discussion forums have expressed hesitation regarding the school's historically lower Fraser Institute rankings, many emphasize that the supportive, safe environment and the dedication of the staff outweigh standardized test scores. The active Parent Advisory Council (PAC) is also noted for organizing community events like winter markets.
Common positives
- Authentic, fully immersive Francophone education (not just French Immersion).
- Free regional bus transportation provided for students.
- Strong community involvement with an active Parent Advisory Council.
- 1-to-1 laptop program ensuring access to technology for all students.
- Dedicated Francization support and special education services.
Common concerns
- Strict admission requirements (parents must meet Section 23 of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms).
- Historically below-average Fraser Institute ratings, though recently improving.
- As a regional school, commute times on the bus may be long for some students.
Who this school may fit
Highly recommended for families who meet the Francophone rights-holder criteria and prioritize cultural preservation and bilingualism over standardized test scores. Families looking for a standard English or French Immersion program will need to look elsewhere, as this school is exclusively for the Francophone community.
Ratings and data
Academic information
École Gabrielle-Roy's elementary division currently holds a Fraser Institute rating of 5.4/10, ranking 647 out of 1032 schools in British Columbia. The school's academic performance has shown significant recent improvement, jumping to 5.4 from a previous score of 1.8. The historical rating trajectory (N/A -> 2.4 -> 3.6 -> 1.8 -> 5.4) and a 5-year average of 3.3 indicate that while the school has historically struggled in standardized testing metrics, it is currently on a strong upward trend. As a dedicated Francophone school, students are assessed in a unique linguistic environment, which can sometimes impact standardized test scores when compared to traditional English-track schools.
