Quick take
School review information
Latimer Road Elementary is a community-oriented school that is making commendable strides in student support and academic improvement. However, the school is currently at the center of Surrey's capacity crisis. Families considering moving to this catchment must be aware that in-catchment registration is not guaranteed, and new students may be redirected to neighboring schools. Until the new classroom additions fully alleviate the space issues, the logistical challenges of enrollment overshadow the school's recent positive developments.
Editorial review summary
Publicly available parent reviews specifically about the teaching quality are limited, so signals are drawn primarily from local news and district parent advisory discussions. The overwhelming theme in parent discussions is severe overcrowding. In 2024, the school had to close enrollment to new in-catchment students due to a lack of space, redirecting neighborhood children to other schools. Parents have expressed significant stress and frustration regarding this capacity crisis, as it complicates childcare and daily commutes. Additionally, the district's decision to relocate the school's Montessori program due to budget and space constraints has been a point of contention among families.
Common positives
- Recent upward trend in academic performance (improved to 4.8/10).
- Participates in a specialized early intervention pilot program for student mental health.
- Strong community support initiatives, including afterschool clubs and nutritional snack programs.
- Receiving a new 6-classroom prefabricated addition to help alleviate overcrowding.
Common concerns
- Severe overcrowding has led to enrollment caps, meaning in-catchment students may be turned away.
- Historically low academic performance with a 5-year average of 2.9/10.
- The school's Montessori program was recently relocated due to district constraints.
- Heavy reliance on portable classrooms while awaiting new construction.
Who this school may fit
For families already enrolled, the school offers improving academics and strong wellness supports. However, for families looking to move into the Latimer Road catchment, it is highly recommended to contact the Surrey School District directly to verify if there is space for your child before finalizing housing. Have a backup plan for transportation and childcare in case your child is redirected to Hillcrest or Katzie Elementary.
Ratings and data
Academic information
Latimer Road Elementary currently holds a Fraser Institute rating of 4.8/10, ranking 773 out of 1032 schools in British Columbia. While this score is below the provincial average, it represents a notable recent improvement for the school. The rating history shows significant historical struggles, with scores fluctuating from 3.4 down to 0, and a previous 5-year average of just 2.9/10. The recent jump to 4.8 suggests that targeted school initiatives, such as their structured early literacy programs and mental health pilot projects, may be positively impacting student achievement.
