School review information
Mathxwi Elementary is a culturally rich, small-scale rural school that prioritizes community connection, Indigenous heritage, and holistic growth over high-pressure academics.
Editorial review summary
Parent and community feedback highlights Mathxwi Elementary's tight-knit, 'village' atmosphere, largely due to its small student body of around 150 children. Families appreciate the school's rural setting in Matsqui Prairie and its strong commitment to Indigenous reconciliation, notably being the first in the district to install an orange eagle-feathered crosswalk. Because it is one of the few schools in the district that readily accepts cross-boundary students, it attracts families looking for a smaller, more personalized environment. However, some reviews and educator notes mention challenges typical of rural schools, such as limited supplies for outdoor play and occasional parent concerns regarding the balance between traditional curriculum and play-based learning.
Common positives
- Very small, close-knit community with only about 150 students.
- Strong commitment to Indigenous culture and Truth and Reconciliation.
- Accepts cross-boundary students, offering flexibility for out-of-catchment families.
- Beautiful rural setting near the Fraser River with opportunities for outdoor learning.
- Active participation in district literacy and gardening programs.
Common concerns
- Below-average Fraser Institute academic rating (5.4/10).
- Limited specialized programs (e.g., no French Immersion or Fine Arts academies).
- Rural location may be inconvenient for families living in central Abbotsford.
- Fewer extracurricular facilities and resources compared to larger urban schools.
