School review information
St. Augustine's School is a top-tier Catholic independent elementary school in Vancouver's Kitsilano neighborhood. It offers a compelling blend of rigorous academics, strong moral instruction, and a deeply engaged parent community. While the religious curriculum, uniform requirements, and mandatory volunteer hours require a specific family commitment, those who align with the school's values will find a nurturing and highly effective educational environment. Prospective families should, however, consider the temporary logistical impacts of nearby transit construction.
Editorial review summary
Publicly available parent reviews and community discussions highlight St. Augustine's as a warm, tight-knit community with a strong emphasis on faith, discipline, and academic excellence. Parents appreciate the small class sizes, dedicated teaching staff, and the structured environment, which includes mandatory uniforms. The school has a highly active Parent Participation Program that requires families to volunteer, fostering a strong sense of involvement. Some parents note that the rigorous academic and religious focus may not suit every family, and recent discussions have mentioned concerns regarding noise and traffic disruptions caused by the nearby Broadway Subway extension construction.
Common positives
- Exceptional and consistent academic performance (Fraser Institute rating of 9.2/10).
- Strong, supportive community with high levels of parent involvement.
- Values-based education focusing on character development, discipline, and Catholic teachings.
- Graduates have a strong track record of acceptance into competitive Vancouver high schools.
Common concerns
- Mandatory parent volunteer hours may be demanding for busy working families.
- Strict adherence to Catholic teachings and uniform policies may not appeal to secular families.
- Proximity to the Broadway Subway project construction has caused recent concerns regarding noise, safety, and traffic disruptions.
Who this school may fit
Highly recommended for families seeking a faith-based, academically rigorous environment and who are eager to actively participate in their child's school community. Families looking for a secular education or those unable to commit to volunteer hours should explore other independent or public school options in the Kitsilano area.
