School review information
Templeton Secondary is a character-rich school that punches above its weight by offering specialized programs that rival private institutions. While its exterior is famously vintage, its interior houses some of Vancouver's most creative and forward-thinking educational streams. It is the ideal choice for students who want to specialize early—whether in filmmaking, engineering, or leadership—within a supportive, unpretentious public school setting.
Editorial review summary
Parents and students frequently describe Templeton as a 'hidden gem' with a tight-knit, welcoming community feel, often contrasting it with larger, more anonymous schools like Van Tech. The 'Dream Big' film program and 'Theatre Temp' are consistently praised as world-class, offering opportunities rare for high schoolers. Reviews highlight the dedicated teachers in the STEM and Mini School programs who foster deep engagement. However, some feedback notes the physical building is quite old (famous as a filming location for this reason) and lacks the modern shine of newer facilities. There is a sentiment that the school has shed its past 'rough' reputation and is now a safe, inclusive environment.
Common positives
- Renowned 'Dream Big' Film and 'Theatre Temp' programs with industry mentorship
- Highly regarded Mini School program with extensive outdoor education trips
- Innovative project-based STEM program integrating Science, Tech, Engineering, and Math
- Strong sense of community and inclusivity; smaller school feel
- Upward trend in academic ranking (Top 30% in province)
Common concerns
- Aging school facility (often used as a film set for 'old school' aesthetics)
- Smaller selection of elective courses compared to massive schools like Van Tech
- Competitive admission for Mini School and STEM cohorts
- Located in a busy area near Hastings Park (PNE), which can be noisy
Who this school may fit
Best suited for students with a specific passion for the Arts (Film/Theatre) or STEM who will thrive in a project-based, hands-on learning environment. It is also an excellent choice for high-achieving students seeking the close-knit cohort experience of a Mini School without the pressure of a massive campus. Families looking for a school with 'soul' and strong teacher-student connections will find it here.
